Frequently asked questions
1
What is a social worker?
Someone who uses the term social worker has an undergraduate social work degree (BSW) or graduate degree (MSW) from a recognized university. In Ontario, social workers are required to register with and become members of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Social workers provide the majority of counselling and psychotherapy services in Ontario.

How do appointments work?
You will be receiving counselling services delivered through the JANE app, which provides end-to-end encryption. If you have to cancel a session, please notify Emily by email at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment. Failure to provide notice in advance will result in having to pay for session fees. Each session is scheduled for 55 minutes. If you are late for a session, the session will still end at the agreed time, and you must pay the total session fee.
3
Do you provide in-person services?
No, at this time, all services are offered virtually.
4
Are your services covered by insurance?
Most private insurance plans cover counselling sessions provided by MSW's. If this is the case, Emily will sign all necessary forms and provide detailed receipts. You should clarify with your insurance company whether a physician’s referral is necessary to activate your coverage. Note that most
insurance companies do not provide reimbursement for cancelled sessions; it is the client’s personal responsibility for missed appointments and any billings not payable by third-party coverage.
5
Do you offer a sliding-scale?
Yes, sliding scale rates are available to those with financial barriers. After one year, the need for reduced-cost sessions will be re-assessed. Please contact me if you are interested in a sliding scale.
6
What can I expect from my/our first session?
The first session is all about getting to know you and building rapport between us. We’ll start by checking in about how you’re doing, followed by an in-depth discussion about who you are and what your goals may be for therapy. Talking about yourself at length may feel awkward or uncomfortable at first. It's your therapists job to make it as comfortable as possible.
7
Do I need to do anything to prepare for therapy?
Prior to your first session you will be asked to complete a short intake form through Jane App, read over some policies and provide informed consent. You may want to bring a notebook to jot down notes during the session, or talking points so you don’t forget. You are welcome to have whatever you need to feel comfortable nearby during session. Sometimes that's a pet, or a cup of tea/ snack.

What if I am in crisis and need to talk someone right away?
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, you can contact 9-8-8, the national suicide hotline, which is available 24/7. If you feel that you are at risk of hurting yourself, please call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest hospital for assistance. Your clinician does not provide emergency services and will not be immediately available by phone or email. Messages left by phone or email will be checked frequently and efforts will be made to return your communication within 24 hours, with the exception of weekends or holidays.
If your question is not answered here, please do not hesitate to contact me at emilypowermsw@gmail.com or at 647-270-0892 and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
